What happens if I win?

If you are selected for a MATC award, Mellon staff will be in touch with you during the summer to discuss the project on which you want to use the funds. You will only need to submit a very brief (1-2 page) project proposal and a very simple (3-5 line) budget, although more information is also welcome. If you are a non-US institution or occupy a special category of not-for-profit status, the U.S. government may require us to collect some additional paperwork from you as well. Your project must meet the following criteria:
- The funds must be used in some way on the project for which your institution was nominated
- Any intellectual property developed with the funds must be released under an approved open source license
- The portion of the project for which you use the MATC funds must not take longer than approximately one year
- You must agree to provide Mellon with a final report at the end of the project, detailing how the funds were used and what was accomplished
Mellon will review your proposal, in order to ensure that what you are proposing does not violate any of the laws or policies under which we must operate (e.g., you cannot use MATC funds to lobby the U.S. government). Once accepted, we can provide the funds at any time, although most grantees prefer to have the funds disbursed after the award ceremony in early December. You are invited to send an institutional representative to the award ceremony; if this is a hardship, some assistance may be available.
